Windows XP

I have had to reinstall windows several times in the last six months and it is beginning to drive me insane. I loose all of my data and then hours of my time updating windows to its current version. Well I hope your having at least a little more success with Windows and enjoy it while i struggle with it. Please note that my YouTube channel will not be updated until next week, as i have lost all of my pre-recorded videos. I have now got Camtasia, which should make my videos better.

Boston Bruins

I don't know how any of you feel about sports, but I love them! My favorite sport is hockey, which I play. I also like baseball and my favorite team is the Boston Red Sox. (World Chapions Again!!) My favorite hockey team is the Boston Bruins and they're not doing that bad, even though their "star" defenceman and captain, Zdeno Chara, sucks. Leave a comment about your favorite sports team or try out the poll that will be uploaded soon!

Firefox 3

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today, I downloaded the Beta release of Firefox 3. Its AWESOME. Better than Firefox 2 by leaps and bounds. Its incredibly stable for a beta release and I am yet to find any bugs. Unfortunately, not many of the add-ons work, only two did in my update. Firefox 3B1 does not overwrite Firefox 2 so you could run them side by side. Firefox 3 is FAST all around. It loads web pages and launches faster than IE or Firefox 2. Heres a email I sent to one of my friends earlier today:

Anti-virus Software

What anti-virus should I use? I personally use AVG. AVG is a free program that scans emails, files, and overall protects your computer. It updates at least twice a week so it is always up to date. There are other versions of the AVG software that you need to pay for, but they do not add much to the program. Most people use Norton. DO NOT USE NORTON! Norton just slows down the computer and takes up hard disk space.

Firewalls

There are several free firewall programs out there some are good and some just suck (like norton. I use Comodo Firewall Pro. Its free and professional quality as the name implies. The first times you launch a program with Comodo installed it asks you Allow or Deny connection to the internet? I found this annoying at first, but now it is not a big deal as it doesn't pop up as much.
I just discovered the new feature in Blogger that allows you to post entries from Google Docs. This is nice because I can save the entries and edit them more easily. I love how intuitive and innovative Blogger is becoming. The only thing that could make this better is if I could post from Microsoft Office.

Best Thunderbird Addon

I've talked about Firefox, Mozilla's internet browser, so now I'm going to talk about Mozilla's email client, Thunderbird. Thunderbird is a basic email client only having inbox, and contacts. There is one addon that brings Thunderbird to new heights. It is called Lightning. It integrates a calendar into Thunderbird, making it work just like Outlook. If you're using Thunderbird you dhould deffinetly download this addon.

A Better Browser

I'll wager that 1 out of every 3 people that visit this site use Firefox. Firefox is the best browser out there. Many people belong to Spread Firefox (membership is free). Firefox is better than Internet Explorer. If anyone can think of anything that Internet Explorer, Opera, or Maxthon can do that Firefox can't I will be very impressed. I'll try to get the new season of Ethan's Computer... out soon. I have been recording some screencasts and am working on editing them. I will post a video every Wednesday or Thursday starting next week. If anyone has any ideas for a video, email me at ethan.baker0@gmail.com. I hope you're using Thunderbird.... but that's not here no there so so long for now, but in the meantime download Firefox and Thunderbird at http://www.mozilla.com.

Firefox (part 1)

Firefox is undoubtedly the best browser out on the market. It is the safest and the easiest to customize. I'm going to focus on the customization factor of Firefox.

Firefox is open source so anyone can build on it. There is something built right into Firefox called add-ons. These can be downloaded from Mozilla's site for free. I have two favorites; FoxMarks and Mouse Gestures.

Foxmarks

Foxmarks allows you to access your Firefox bookmarks from any computer. This is a Firefox add-on. I am now going to show you how to install and use Foxmarks!

Installing on your main PC.

  1. Install Firefox.
  2. Download the Foxmarks plugin here
  3. Allow the plugin to install and restart Firefox.
4. On Firefox reboot, you should see a windows like this:

5. Follow the on-screen directions. Here are screenshots of all of the steps:

Ok they're in order, but somethings up with the alignment.

Thanks for reading Part One. Part Two will teach how to access these bookmarks!

Hockey Again

This morning I played in another hockey game. We won 7-3 against Southeast. I'll be posting a longer post late today about Firefox and its addons.

Hockey Game

As you may have seen in my Twitter I had a hockey game. We tied 4-4 against Greater New Haven. It was a great game. We were losing 3-4 until 11 seconds left in the game. We pulled our goalie and scored.

Rainy Day

Hey Guys,

Since its pouring out here, I decided to start a blog. It's not really going to be about anything but still itll be fun for me. So today I found some cool stuff that I'm going to try and include in the blog sidebar. One of these things is called Twitter. Now all of you can know what im up to via an RSS feed. Also, i have an AIM widget so anyone can IM me if im signed in, even if you dont have an AIM account.

The other big thing I'm doing today is installing/downloading Xubuntu, an open source version of Ubuntu. For those of you who don't know, Ubuntu is the most popular kernel of Linux. If you don't know what a Linux Kernel is your screwed. (Just kidding Click here to learn about kernels) Because Xubuntu is open source, you can download it for free. Except for the fact that its 528 mb and is gonna take 4 hrs to download. Otherwise its fantastic. Theres another blog soley devoted to Xubuntu which has some good pictures and a video of Xubuntu in action. You can find that blog here.

Thanks and keep up-to-date with me on my Twitter!!

Ethan

Linux Kernels

A Linux kernel could be thought of as an engine. A linux based OS can be thought of as a car.

One of my operating systems in Xubuntu which is linux based. So Xubuntu is our car. Our car, Xubuntu, runs on the Linux kernel, the engine. Therfore, Xubuntu is based off of the Linux Kernel

Thats the best way I can put it. Google it if you still don't understand!
